SNOW!!

The neighbor's house
It doesn't snow here much.  I heard it was like .3 of an inch average per year.  I remember some dusting of snow our first winter here.  February of 2012 we ended up with around 6 inches...  So, we really shouldn't be surprised that it snowed again.  Thank you, Global Warming??  We had about 4 inches of dry snow.  It was super cold - in the teens for about 3 days - so the snow didn't melt away.

Here's P playing in the snow.

B put P in the snow to crawl around.  It ended up a cute video.

"It's cold!"

Thanksgiving

A year makes a big different.  P was only 1 month old for his first Thanksgiving.  This year he got to eat at the big kids table.  So grown up.

Traditions

I wrote this back when it was still fall....but then winter came last week and I still hadn't posted this.  Why, why don't I just hit publish????

Fall means it is time for the Hignite Annual Hood River Trip.  B and I started this tradition the year before we were married.  I was surprised he lasted that trip - with my parents, in the old mini van.  This year we weren't able to make a separate trip so we stopped on our way home from Utah.  We were rushed and it wasn't as fun as normal.  But we did grab a few photos and LOTS of apples.

Can you tell we just spent 3 days in a car??

P is so stinking cute!

A little creepy...

Visting Utah and A Few Stories

In October we headed to Utah to visit the Hignite clan.  It had been two years since we step foot in Utah.  It was a good thing we went because while we were visiting, B's dad got a job offer in Salt Lake.  It was probably our last visit to the home, though we will still be able to visit Cedar City and B's brothers.  Here's some fun points from our trip.

This photo shows the moment in time I should have realize our trip would start off bumpy....
P decided to unpack my suitcase...before I finished packing
We were supposed to leave for Portland on Tuesday.  B had meetings until Thursday at noon, spend the night in Twin Falls, then take the rest of the trip on Friday.  Instead: Monday B was told about a presentation he had to do Thursday at 5pm in Boardman.  (Don't get me started on this!  It was scheduled last minute, when everyone who should be at the meeting was at their normal monthly meetings in Portland. They hoped no one would show to give their point of view.  Jerks!)  This meant B had to work on his presentation Tuesday instead of attending the meeting in PDX that day.  So, we drove to PDX Wednesday, made it to Boardman Thursday afternoon, got a super late start for Twin Falls, and decided to stay the night in Boise instead.  It made for a loooong car ride and a super cranky P by the time we reached Cedar City.

This schedule change meant I spent the 3 hour wait in Boardman trying to keep P entertained. And Boardman is t-i-n-y.  I found a park with baby swings.  P had a blast.  It was the first time on a swing.

We had to eat really fast once B was done with his presentation.  I got burgers from C&D Drive-in and, well, P must have remembered when I ate there twice during my pregnancy.

This was the first time most everyone in the family met P.  Grams and Gramps came last December for P's blessing, but everyone else hadn't seen P.  Here is a great photo of Great Grams Mabel and P.

When we walked into the house I noticed a huge resemblance to P in the photos on the wall.  P looks just like Uncle Jeff when Jeff was little.  Seriously - it was crazy.  We ran into Dr. Bob on campus and even he said P was definitely a Hignite.  I didn't get a photo of Jeff as a baby, but here is Jeff with P at the Home Depot Kids Clinic.

Newport might need to get a Home Depot just so P can build more things.  Isn't he cute in his apron??
Another story:  While at Home Depot, we ran into a lady my mom grew up with in Baker City!  She was with the animal shelter booth and B told her we were from Oregon.  You can figure it out from there.  She remembered my mom and my mom remembered her when I asked.  (Mom even went to a dance with the gal's brother!)

We found out Bruno's had reopened.  I don't like Italian that much, but B has Italian in his blood - literally.  And now P eats anything with marinara sauce on it.
B wanted to see the SUU campus again.  He mentioned something about becoming a true T-bird that included Old Sorrel....  We took photos of P instead.

On the way to Provo, we decided to stop in Beaver at Cache Valley Cheese.  P loves squeeky cheese... even if it isn't Tillamook.

Squeek squeek!

In Provo, we met up with my old college buddies and a couple of old Newport friends.  It will be nice to be with B's parents in Salt Lake next time.  It will give us more time to see these friends!  Since we went to SUU, we had to go to BYU.  Here is P with Brother Brigham.
I cleaned the building behind us!
On the way home we stayed with my uncle and aunt in Boise.  They decided to invite all my aunts, uncles, and cousins over for dessert.  It was fun to see everyone.  I was surprised who all came just to see little old me (actually it was probably to see P).  Here is a photo of P confused why Grams Hines was there.  It's really my aunt who looks a lot like my mom.

And here is my Uncle making sure P gets a swing for Christmas.

On the way back to Newport we stopped in Baker City at my grandparents' graves.  I was happy I was able to find them all by myself!

We stopped in Hood River and Portland on the way home....but that's for another post.

Web Feet

We took P to the pool a while back.  He loved it.  So, we have made some effort to take P to more water things.

In August I ended up in the ER in Newport.  They didn't really know if I needed more tests, but decided to send me to Corvallis anyway, since the hospital there is larger (and better).  I was, and am, fine.   (Newport totally over-reacted.)  Anyway, when I was released from the hospital in Corvallis, Brandon and I took P to the water park.  It was a very hot day, and we needed the break after the LONG weekend.  So, here is P enjoying the waterpark.

Please, ignore me.  I didn't even have my contacts....

And then I had a doctor appointment in Corvallis a month later.  So, we visited the water fountain at Riverfront Commemorative Park.  P was quite wet for the ride home.

Double Double Take

*Note: I wrote this on Friday...not today, Sunday.  I got distracted with life before it was posted.

Here is another entry for Bad Mom of the Year....

The last couple of weeks P has been very cranky.  Like, so cranky I wonder if I can give him away.  Don't worry - I'd never do that. (sad that these days you have to actually say something like, "I'd never do that" because someone will call child services on you if you don't.  You really think parents like that blog??)  I was so frustrated thinking I can't handle the terrible two's if he's like this at one.  He has also been napping a ton.  This made me worry because I thought he was sick or had something horrible.  (Diabetes?  Family history, and we did give him lots of sugar with Halloween and his birthday.  Cancer?  There was that mom in Portland who just happened to feel her 2 year old's cantaloupe sized liver tumor.)   P did start to take a few steps here and there - a new skill that could take extra sleep.  We knew P had a top incisor coming in, which does cause him to sleep a little more during the day and wake up at night needing to be held to fall back asleep.  But this was a little more than that.

Yeah....that's because I am totally not observant.  Today B pointed out that last night he discovered P had his 2 top molars in now.  Seriously???  He doesn't even have all his bottom incisors.  Of course, I then realized one* of those was almost poking through.  So, this little guy was working on 4 teeth, 2 of which are tough molars.  I think he handled it better than I would.  It's tough being a 12 month old.

*Note - that bottom incisor has arrived...

Now, here's a cute video of P 'dancing' to his EleFun.

All Hallows' Eve

This year was not P's first Halloween.  Since he was two days old and we were still in the hospital last year, we acted like this was his first.  We didn't plan to take P trick or treating.  I mean, who takes their one year old trick or treating when babies shouldn't have candy??  Wait, we do.

It started with the Trunk or Treat at our church the evening before Halloween.

Ready for some Trunks or Treats

Then B's work had some people bring their kids the last 15 minutes of work - so we went.
Here is P discovering the executive pumpkin.  (I couldn't get it to embed, so it's just a link until I get it fixed.)

A co-worker had to get a photo....

And finally we headed to the Deco District of town for Trick or Treating at the shops.
Oooo, a piece of candy!
A Reese's fan just like Pops
P had fun once he learned to pick up the treats

In case you couldn't tell, we went as Sponge Bob Squarepants, Patrick Star, and Plankton.  We also had Gary the Snail tag along to collect the loot.  I was hoping the cat would be Gary, but she wouldn't have it. (Meow)  And to answer the obvious: yes, I made the costumes.  No, I don't have spare time.  (I sew to relax.)  Basically I ignored B for many nights after P went to bed.
